Lawn growth depends on nutrients or essential elements absorbed by roots from the soil.
When natural soil processes do not provide adequate supplies of these essential elements, fertilizer can be applied to maintain optimum turfgrass growth.
The purpose of fertilizing a lawn is to add the necessary nutrients in the required amounts and at the proper time to achieve desirable lawn qualities and healthy turfgrass plants.
Over time your soil naturally becomes compacted, leaving the subsoil undesirable for healthy lawn growth.
Walking, playing, mowing, and watering compact particles and reduce the air space necessary for root growth.
Compaction is greatest in the upper 1 to 1 inches of soil and needs to be relieved by mechanical aeration.
This mechanical process plugs 2-3 inch deep, finger size holes into the soil to improve the air, water, and nutrient exchange with your roots.
These days, the easiest way to grow a new lawn is to have sod installed.
A sod lawn grows much quicker and requires much less maintenance than a seeded grass lawn.
But, after you've had sod put down in your yard, it is important to take care of it properly to ensure that it lasts and your lawn is beautiful for years to come.
When your sod is installed, you should immediately begin watering it twice daily for one week then once daily with an inch of water (about fifteen to twenty minutes) during each session until the sod is rooted in the soil.
Your grass plant is composed of 90% water.
Any change in this water composition rapidly puts the lawn under stress, resulting in a shallow root system and thinning turf. 1 to 1 inches of water needs to be applied, all at one time, three to four times per week.
Raising the mowing height can improve the health of your root system and increase density, reducing weed seed germination rates.
A good mowing height is 2 to 3 inches.
If the lawn has too much shade, the grass will not be efficient at developing food or roots, and will become notably thin.
The most obvious benefit of utilizing xeriscaping in your landscaping design is the reduction of water use.
There are many other direct and indirect benefits.
If your area enacts water restrictions during times of draught, your landscape will be well prepared to continue to thrive within those watering restrictions.
When traditional yards are turning brown and dying, your garden will continue to thrive.
