My brother and I have long shared the goal of cultivating a garden setting in which people can grow, feel whole, and fully enjoy the wonders of life on Earth.
A garden school has been a seed in my mind for a while, and that seed was finally able to sprout when a special property in Beverly became available.
In my capacity as farm manager and educator for approximately 10 years at The Food Project's farms in Beverly and Wenham, I enjoyed helping high-schoolers and volunteers connect with and embrace the wonderful world of sustainable agriculture, and I wanted to further this work and reach an underserved population: young adults who are still finding their direction in life.
While The Garden School is functioning as a resource for people of all ages to learn horticulture and agriculture, we are developing our "Growth Year" program for 18 to 24 year-olds.
Eventually The Garden School will host several young adults in our Growth Year program, a unique opportunity for them to mature, explore interests, develop skills, acquire job experience, and cultivate a sense of community through deeply meaningful agricultural work.
But we first need to create dorm space for such a residential program.
At our campus in Beverly, we offer a variety of experience-based educational opportunities, including summer internships for young adults with off-campus housing opportunities.
This program is a wonderful opportunity for young people to take a time-out to mature, develop skills, acquire work experience, and cultivate a sense of community through meaningful work.
Young adults interested in working and learning with us this growing season can "Contact Us" for more information.
We love engaging our neighbors and meeting new friends from all over the North Shore.
The Garden School Farm Stand has become a joy-filled focal point that connects us with the local community.
We get great pleasure in providing nutritious, locally-grown produce for friends and neighbors.
Our flowers brighten our tables as well as the lives of those who buy our bouquets.
On a practical level, the Farm Stand serves as the culmination of our agricultural programming.
Beyond bringing in much-needed revenue to fund our programs, it provides an opportunity for our students to learn about budgeting and marketing to complement their gardening work.
Week-by-week, The Garden School Farm Stand offers an abundant harvest from our various gardens.
Over the season you'll find the standard seasonal offerings such as tomatoes, beets, carrots, micro-greens, various lettuces, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, mushrooms, green beans and summer and winter squashes.
We also bring in fresh produce from local farms that enable us to expand our offerings to include locally-grown apples, peaches, plums, and berries.
As a special added touch, we offer fresh bouquets from our flower garden.
