Services
The Gurnee Garden Center opened its doors in 1973.
A young entrepreneur, Jerry Laux and his wife, Shirley, began small and leased land selling plants in the spring, fruits and vegetables in the summer and Pumpkins and apples in the fall.
After 4 years they purchased land and began building the new Gurnee Garden Center, concentrating on spring and summer plants and fall crafts.
Through the help of family members, the garden center grew, the varieties of plants grew, and of course, the staff grew, but still keeping with the same family atmosphere.

Perennials are plants that come back year after year adding a variety of textures, scents, colors, and heights to your garden.
Perennials can be used to plant a border, an island of plants, a formal garden, country garden, ornamental garden or herb garden, just to name a few.
Perennials can be planted by themselves or incorporated with annuals for constant summer color.
You can coordinate plants by color or select plants of different colors, textures, bloom times and heights.
With the latter you will have a colorful garden all season long.

Plants that grow, flower, produce seeds and die in one growing season are called annuals.
They may last only one season but they go strong until a heavy frost.
You can enjoy them in hanging baskets, planters, or in the ground and they give constant bloom.
Plant annuals among your perennials to add continuous color using your taller perennials as a backdrop.
A few varieties like Dianthus, Snapdragons, Moss roses, Pansies, Petunias and Alyssum will sometimes reseed themselves.
That's a bonus!
Other common annuals such as Ageratum, Aster, Begonia, Browallia, Celosia, Coleus, Dahlia, Dusty Miller, Gazania, Impatiens, Marigold, Salvia, Verbena, Vinca, and Zinnia are sold in 4 plant packs and 48 plant flats for mass plantings.

There is nothing more breath taking than a rose in the garden.
Besides magnificent beauty, roses offer diversity in form and ranges in color.
Roses vary from miniature mounds to giant climbers, spreading ground covers to a fence of blossoms with hedge roses or shrubs.
What could be more beautiful than a garden of hybrid tea roses, a potted tree rose topiary on your front deck or the soft fragrance from English roses as you pass by the landscape.
Like any flower, choosing the right rose for the area can make the perfect setting.

Most herbs need a sunny area with well drained soil to grow.
Herbs are easy and fun to grow and are great for culinary uses.
They add flavor to food and what could be better than adding fresh herbs?
Using fresh Basil in tomato sauces, Chives in salads or potatoes, Marjoram in fish or soups, Sage and Thyme in poultry dressings, Mints in juices, or Stevia as a natural sweetener will definitely spice up your food.
Herbs can be planted directly in the ground or in pots.
Planting a variety of herbs around a potted tomato or pepper plant can be both decorative and useful.
