The Irish were greatly despised in this country, so our name was shortened from Ballymacanaward (from County Sligo, Ireland) to a more "English sounding name" before the family moved to America.
I developed a love of gardening from my parents working in the yard throughout my youth.
Mom had her various annual and perennial gardens.
Dad handled the lawn and maintenance of the bushes.
Both of them came together to plant, tend and harvest the vegetable garden.
All the while, we kids helped out by weeding and learning about the different plants.
