University of South Florida and Texas A&M released Floratam in 1973.
Floratam turf has the following advantages.
Cold- Hardy: Floratam's cold hardiness is an advantage to the consumer in the Central parts of Florida.
Sun tolerant: Floratam loves direct sunlight and tolerate particle shady (less then 20%).
Deep shade areas need to be avoided.
Attractive: Floratam creates a thick, lush carpet of St. Augustine grass.
Its is easily distinguishable from most varieties by its reddish, stolon color.
Virus Resistance: Floratam is S.A.D resistant and shows good leaf disease resistance due to its open, long internodes and coarse growth habit.
