Through careful selection of window systems, and use of of local materials, connection, comfort, and inspiration are qualities evoked in the Hill House. Variegated cedar vertical siding suggests an evening lit forest, where board and batten, originating in Norway and Sweden was used to protect log and timber structures from weathering. Acknowledgement of Historical building practices and sensitivity to native landscape context provides roots to the Hill house.
Working with Denise A. our goal was to to create her dream home. We researched European Villa, Farmhouse & Industrial Building Design in order to capture qualities of a joyous farm work and play space. High ceilings allowed for soaring windows. Exposed joist ceilings, car-decking, and cross bracing evoked the rustic grandeur of an old Farmhouse. Denise built her own bat houses to promote pollinators and pest control.
Later a guesthouse garage and lush garden area developed on the property. The Vashon House continues to grow both in structures and landscape design.

One of the lovely things about a courtyard house, is how much privacy, quiet and connection to nature the layout can provide.
Bedroom spaces can be separated to the three different arms of the courtyard, allowing sound isolation and multiple natural light sources.
In this home, the studio apartment can be used separately or incorporated into the home as a suite.
Care is taken to provide diagonal views through rooms, directing your view along the longest axis of the space, to create breadth in a small home.
