Walter Cudnohufsky Associates, Inc., in collaboration with Kraus-Fitch Architects, were first place winners in "Sustainable, Equitable, SMART: An Ideas Competition for the Pioneer Valley" sponsored by the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission in 2010.
In awarding the prize, judges commended the design for realigning roads for safer circulation, encouraging suitable commercial development, and clustering mixed use buildings.
They called the graphic analysis "brilliant, " the overall design "most in keeping with the scale of the village" and concluded "This entry is the best thinking through how you make a village center - it slows people down, makes connections, works for pedestrians.
Since 1992, Walter Cudnohufsky Associates, Inc. has built a reputation for uncommon excellence in planning and design, through projects ranging from residential site design to community-wide visioning and master planning.
We embrace the parallel challenges of design research, publication production and graphic design as these fields relate to design and planning work.
The projects featured here are representative of the diverse nature of our work.
WCA has collaborated with South Mountain Company and Island Housing Trust for projects on Martha's Vineyard, bringing site planning expertise to housing projects whose goal is to protect the land and establish an environment conducive to building community.
Here is one example.
At Eliakim's Way, eight homes were aligned for solar gain and clustered around a central common.
Parking areas were sited for easy access and limited footprint, thereby concentrating vehicular traffic and freeing the pathway circling the common to pedestrians, play space and emergency vehicle access.
Revised vehicular circulation will make efficient use of parking while increasing garden and sale space at this Greenfield, MA cooperative market.
This Pioneer Valley net-zero home will reduce its carbon footprint further with low-maintenance fescue lawns and meadow areas.
Berkshire County home takes advantage of stone and native plants to create this naturalized waterfall.
Formal gardens embrace this home, while a more naturalized stairway invites residents to the lakefront.
The memorial wall and garden were designed to provide a quiet place for reflection while guiding movement through the church yard.
The following examples of our project work demonstrate the diversity of our projects.
Since 1992, Walter Cudnohufsky Associates, Inc. has built a reputation for uncommon excellence in planning and design.
We employ a rigorous design process of site assessment, program definition, conceptual design, schematic alternatives and design development regardless of the scale of the project or nature of the client.
Working with public and quasi-public clients invariably involves facilitating a public process with a broad range of interested parties, often with conflicting agendas.
