Landscape Designer ZDA will survey your outdoors and design a unique landscape to fit your needs and compliment the natural surroundings. From patios with a fire feature to water fountains, ZDA will create that "Wow" factor that your family and visitors will be appreciating for years to come. ZDA designs your residential outdoor living space to create personal, private space for outdoor living, dining, and kitchen prep.

The richness of materials we use enhance the urban lines of your backyard. Deliberate, minimalist, and low maintenance plant selection soften the space, providing privacy and a sense of place. Heated patios keep snow off paved walks and driveways in the winter, allowing you and your family family to use the space year-round. Perennial Gardens can serve as beautiful transitions between your home and nature.

Because perennial gardens remain in the ground all year, their roots have access to all available rain water. Rainwater runoff is reduced because the soil is never left exposed; the thick grass catches and directs rain water down into the ground.

During an historic restoration and renovation of a private residence in the Village of Shorewood Hills, Wisconsin, our thorough site analysis uncovered extensive landscape components from the original 1930-1936 design by renowned landscape architect Franz Aust.
Aust was a prominent landscape architect in the Madison area from 1930-1957, Head of the Landscape Architecture Department at the UW Madison, and was closely associated with Frank Lloyd Wright, Jens Jensen, and Arthur Caldwell.
In discovering the pieces of this landscape-remnant stone walls, a pond, and various plantings - we took steps to reclaim and reuse the on-site stone, unearth the pond, and carefully reconstruct the viable stone components after locating suitable materials in an abandoned quarry.
The clients' goal to improve their landscape in keeping with the Craftsman character of their home.
Priorities included developing a more gracious and welcoming front stoop and patio, elegant low maintenance plantings, and better management of stormwater.
ZDA paid special attention to the house's interior and exterior detailing and materials.
Stone and brick selection, new handrails and light posts blend seamlessly with the home's architecture and contributed to the owners earning Wisconsin's Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit.
The Van Hise Storybook House was formerly owned by a UW Madison professor of botany who created a native woodland herbarium in the yard.
The new owner approached ZDA with the task of updating the property to meet the young family's needs, while preserving the historic character of the house and landscape.
New entry patio, breakfast patio, path and stairways blend seamlessly with the existing stone walls.
Plants were selected to complement the collection of native spring ephemerals and woody plants.
ZDA collaborated with the architect to site a large dwelling and private museum on a challenging property (6.5 acres) to optimize lake views and integrate the home into the landscape.
ZDA's Master Plan addressed site circulation and incorporated auxiliary parking and equipment access for the museum without compromising the residential character of the estate.
The property includes orchards, kitchen and ornamental gardens, chicken coup, and boathouse.
ZDA developed extensive construction documents and supervised the entire construction process to carry out the owner's design intent.
This private residence on Lake Mendota brought the challenges of new construction on a very narrow lot.
The client's goals included sustainable water management, the creation of outdoor entertainment and gathering areas, maximizing full views to the lake from the lower level of the house and patio, and creating rain gardens to provide beauty and to capture and infiltrate stormwater.
An underground infiltration system was designed to capture and filter runoff from the new home and all hardscape features prior to entering the lake.
