Zachary Berger Associates, Ltd. is an ecological design and consulting firm, founded in 1997 and serving all of New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. Our niche practice bridges the gap between sustainable landscape architecture and restorative ecology. Our work endeavors to integrate and partner with northeastern ecoregions, which include the Northeastern Highlands, Northeastern Coastal Zone, Acadian Plains and Hills, and Eastern Great Lakes Lowlands.
We provide design, consulting and administration for land conservation and restoration throughout northern New England. We are experienced in working with challenging environments- mountainside, lakeside and oceanside. Zachary's passion for natural landscapes began during his formative years rambling around the hills and valleys of the rural Connecticut River Valley.
In his teens, his journey led him to the western Maine foothills and lakes region where he started his design career, drawing out raised beds and food crop companion plantings on graph paper for the family's large organic garden.

Projects - We believe each project has a unique story but they all share a common process: tuning in and understanding the land and its stewards, and then creating beautiful ecological solutions.
Elements are the essentials of every project.
The parts make up the whole and it's on us to fit it all together to achieve design harmony that endures.

By now most of us have heard or read about sustainability perhaps hundreds of times.
But ask yourself or another person what sustainability means and a concise response will be unlikely.
We generally know what it means but we have difficulty articulating it.
My distilled definition is that sustainability is the core of ecological balance based on our use and re-use of natural resources.
Our current and future existence is dependent on the stability and health of our natural environment.
Sustainability is the continuation of natural systems without depletion of necessary resources.
