RENEGADE GARDENER is the Web's best site for gardeners seeking truth, hope, and one lousy sign that someone unfettered by industry prejudice is helping you become a better gardener. Originally designed to help gardeners banished to the forgotten USDA Zones 2-4, bold content has made it one of the Web's most-linked gardening sites. Gardening is gardening, design is design, dumb is dumb, and truth conquers all!

My debut effort already is garnering good reviews. I invite you to travel courtesy of your favorite Renegade Gardener into a wilderness world of danger, suspense, mysticism, romance and live bait. If your favorite Barnes and Noble or indie bookstore doesn't have it in stock, they can order it for you with prompt delivery. Why wouldn't you? It's a wild, lightly humorous ride through the Ontario wilderness, filled with eccentric characters, danger, suspense, mysticism, romance and live bait.

The Renegade Gardener is Don Engebretson, an award-winning Minnesota garden writer and designer.

This is such a beautiful, well behaved and simple to grow plant.
I had a semi-tough spot in a landscape job in Golden Valley, Minnesota around six years ago.
It was a fairly short bed, maybe nine feet long by four feet wide.
It was prominent, a polite little corner bed up against the low fence hiding the mechanics of the adjacent swimming pool.
Part sun was all, maybe four hours, so I needed something that would grow well, bloom, give me some fall color, and not grow too large.
I planted three 'Regent' Serviceberries.
Founded in Florida in 2004, with offices in Delray Beach and Vancouver, British Columbia, Gsky designs and builds vertical Living Walls across North America, Europe, Australia and the Middle East.
They have designed a vertical wall plant growing system that incorporates the latest technology in low flow drip water emitters, lighting and programmable controllers.
They've done some very cool outdoor projects but their technology allows them also to bring the outside indoors.
Check out these cool pictures of their work, and their website.
Ran into this one late last season after finishing installation of a large native pollinator garden comprised of beneficial native shrubs, perennials and grasses.
I encouraged and won approval for installation of a sprawling drip irrigation system throughout the area, because, well, plants need water.
Objection from the client was only mild, but the question was asked: Hey, these are essentially native prairie plants, water them at installation but after that, shouldn't they make it on their own?
Little did the Renegade Gardener know that of the five regularly updated features on the site, "Myth of the Week" would prove to be the most popular.
Is it their superb timeliness?
Their horticultural accuracy?
Their unflinching profundity?
The fact that they provided easy fodder for snotty one-liners?
Yes, I've mellowed over the years.
Twenty years ago, in my petulant youth (OK, petulant middle age) I'd probably admonish, "Don't use concrete retaining wall block or patio pavers, use natural stone!"
I realize now that for many, budget does come into play.
Concrete landscaping products are going to make for a less expensive hardscape addition to your yard.
Just don't go cheap.
It's as I've always said, there are three categories of products where one is always served best by buying the best, and that means the most expensive: fishing, camping and gardening.
